Mt. Bethel Christian Academy’s Claire Peterson is making quite a name for herself, and our school, in the Cross Country circles. Adding to her collection of honors this week was MileSplit GA awarding her The XC Runners of the Week for Week Five. Peterson grabbed this Runner of the Week honor for her Overall Title in the Big Peach Mustang with a time of 12:08.
Yes… her final overall victory time was just twelve minutes and eight seconds.
Most of us cannot even drive two miles (3200 meters/1.98 miles) in East Cobb in 12 minutes on some days!
And 12:08 isn’t her personal best time either…
By the way, did we mention Peterson is just an 8th-grader?
“I love every minute of coaching every kid in the sport of cross country,” said Middle School AD and Head Middle School Cross Country Coach Greg Hall. “We’ve had numerous star runners at Mt. Bethel over the 15 years of the MS program. Claire Petersen has proven to be one of the best forces on the course for our program to date. She is an absolute pleasure to coach. She is a constant worker, and her future is so bright it hurts my eyes.”
Despite her short time on the course, Peterson has never finished outside of the Top 10 in any race.
Yes, you did read that right…
So far, Peterson has competed in 27 races for Mt. Bethel. Of those 27, she has won 18 races and has placed in the Top-5 25 times. Her only two finishes outside of the Top-5 was an 8th-Place and a 6th-Place finish when she was a 6th-Grader.
Let’s break this down one step further because her drive to win still may not be clear.
- 6th-Grade — Won 4 of 10 Events. Top 5 eight times. Outside of Top 5 twice. Finished in Top 10 in all 10 races.
- 7th Grade — Won 8 of 11 Events. Finished in the Top-5 in all 11 races.
- 8th Grade — Season to date… Six races… Six victories. Two races remaining.
She won the Marist Invitational yesterday with a time of 12:37 on a tough, hilly course. Peterson’s best time in her career is 12:04 she set at the Big Peach Mustang Stampede last season (9/15/18). Her best time this season is a 12:06 win at the Whitefield Time Trials (9/7/19).
Just two races remain for Peterson in her middle school career. Her next race is on Oct. 3 at the Wesleyan Invitational at the Wesleyan School in Peachtree Corners, GA, at 4:30. Her final race is the Metro 10 Championship Meet on October 8 at St. Francis High School in Milton, GA, at 4:00.
Time to make plans to watch Claire as she continues to make history for herself and the Eagles XC squad!
